Aren’t some business blogs boring? Reading some is worse than watching paint dry…
From dry facts and figures to regurgitated content and news, no wonder many business owners feel discouraged from even starting blogging.
I’m often asked what is the point in blogging for business, particularly small business. And, in truth, there isn’t one single “point” to blogging at all.
Now, before you roll your eyes at me and wander off, hear me out. There isn’t a single point in blogging for your small business because there are many points. The benefits of a blog are so immense that I couldn’t possibly cover them all in a single post. I have chosen three benefits of business blogs that I feel have the most impact.
Contents
#1 Relevant Content.
Keeping your website updated and current can be a pain. Often, it’s written in a code you don’t understand, you need to keep going back to your web-developer to get updates online. That costs!
Over the last few years, the internet has changed. Static business card type websites are very much a thing of the past. Internet users want current information, they want to interact, they want to be social.
A business blog is the perfect platform for your small business that you can keep updated and have the opportunity for your audience to interact with you. But, don’t follow the crowd – your small business blog is not just a way to keep up with the Jones’ online!
Posting great content that people want to read (and share!) is a must.
A mistake many small businesses make is to just cut and paste “news” or other sources of information. Let’s be frank here, people can read the latest news on news sites. Why should they go to you to read something that is already out of date by the time you have posted?
By all means post snippets of news, if it’s from a trusted source link back to the main story too. Don’t just copy and paste the whole story.
This is where you make your blog unique so also add your spin, your take, your thoughts on the story. How will it affect your audience in your opinion?
#2 Expert Status
Establishing yourself as an expert in your field, the “go to” person for information, is much easier with a blog. People search online for information all the time. From how to do certain tasks, to details of products and services.
You may be wondering why your business should give out information.
Well, if you don’t someone else, maybe your competitors, will. It’s all about building trust, building up a relationship, showing to your target audience that your business knows what it’s talking about.
A blog personalises your company and its products/services, which in turn increases the value of your organisation in the eyes of your target audience.
#3 Increased Online Visibility
The reason why you have a business website is for online visibility. Blogs are fantastic for increasing your web presence. Their organised structure teamed with regular targeted content updates can make blogs a virtual magnet for search engines. That’s why we are all here, to be visible, to be found by our potential clients. Business blogs are one of the easiest and cost effective ways to market your small business online.
