A couple of weeks ago, I was invited over to St Helens Chamber of Commerce to take part in an interview about New Enterprise Allowance and self-employment. It went out on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme early this morning.
I was cut down to one line *sobs*.
It was an experience that pushed me way out of my comfort zone and I am so glad I was invited to take part. An adventure no less!
But, what surprised me was I was introduced as someone who has set up a search engine optimisation company. Well, that was news to me…
It was more shocking as I chatted about Facebook Timeline changes, which certainly isn’t SEO. I chatted about Google Places too. At a push that can be called local SEO I guess.
This isn’t the first time I have denied “doing just SEO”. Yes, I can do all that competitor analysis stuff. Yes, I can tweak and change website internal tags. Yes, I can do link building that doesn’t involve spamming WordPress comments and spinning articles.
But, that isn’t what I “do”.
It comes down to what I think I do and what you think I do…
I need your help to sort this out once and for all and tighten up how I present myself.
So what do I do?
Well, I start with finding out where you are now and where you want to be with your web marketing strategy. I advise how to get there and how to tie it in with more traditional marketing too.
I set up and optimise Google Places and associated accounts. I find and update citations, I can maintain your listing on an ongoing basis.
If you need a website, I build one that works. If you want web “design”, I have contacts who design websites and/or graphics who I work alongside.
I build WordPress websites, and they need maintaining and updating. I do that on a regular basis too. If you are blogging (and you should be!) I can help you with that or show you how to do it.
Does social drive you insane? I can help you pin down where your audience is and set up social media accounts. If you need help monitoring accounts and replying, I can do that. I work with graphics guys as necessary too for any headers or backgrounds you may need.
I help you attract local people online using a combination of techniques from SEO, to social, to paid advertising. I work with other marketers, social managers, copywriters, graphics and web designers when needed.
Basically, I understand how things work and fit together online. I can do some or all of it for you or show you how to do it yourself.
So over to you…
I’d love to know what you think I do and what to call myself! You can leave a comment below, or over on Facebook or mail me. I appreciate your help 🙂

Hi Jan,
It sounds like you are a go to person for those who need their foundations set up. For example, I could recommend you as an outsource person to my folks who were looking for someone who has expertise in setting up blogs, and other areas of biz that I am not an expert in.
You have so many talents. Thanks for letting me know all that you do.
Cindy
Hi Cindy, thanks for popping by 🙂
That’s exactly what I do – build foundations. Now how to put it in a way that people don’t say, “ahh you do SEO?” lol
Well done on your radio appearance.
Your dilemma sounds similar to mine! What do you call yourself?
You sound like the ‘go to girl’ for marketing your local business online, but I’m afraid I can’t think up any catchy descriptions at present.
Let us know when you come up with your ideal name 🙂
Thanks Valerie! We do have a similar issue don’t we. Time to get out on the street and find out what words normal people use 🙂
