Video Blogging Challenge Day 4

March 7, 2014 by Jan Kearney

Thinking will not overcome fear, but action will
I left it rather late to do today’s video blogging challenge video! It did mean I couldn’t follow Bonnie’s tips about natural lighting, since it was already dark.  I have taken them on board though and will try to implement them tomorrow.  I also took my daughter’s advice and raised the camera slightly too.

In this video, I explain a little more about why I am doing the challenge and the EFT session I had today to overcome my self-sabotage and fear of putting myself out there.  My session was with Angelita Woosnam, an EFT Practitioner in Warrington.  You’ll find more about her over on her website.

Find out more about the Bonnie Gean’s Video Challenge on her blog – it’s not too late to join in!

Once again, the transcript is below the video for those who prefer to read.

Video Blogging Challenge Day 4

Video Transcript

Hi it’s Jan Kearney at My Local Business Online and this is day 4 of Bonnie Gean’s Video Blogging Challenge. Yesterday, I did cheat a little and do a screencast tutorial on how to put your business on Foursquare. Because these blogs, video blogs are going onto my business blog, I think it’s important I continue a business theme running throughout and that I don’t talk too much about me.

However, today I do want to talk about me a little bit. I want to share an experience with you that I had today because I think other people might find it useful.

One of the reasons I’m doing the video blogging challenge is overcome some fears I have about putting myself out there online and in life in general. I’m not particularly a social person! I’ve been online for many, many years, 20+ years. Until I started My Local Business Online, I never used my real name and indeed, it took me nearly 3 years to put a picture of me online after that. So talking on video is something I don’t feel comfortable with, especially on video then putting it online.

Taking part in the video blogging challenge is going to give me the opportunity to get a little bit more comfortable speaking in front of the camera. Hopefully will mean going forward in the future, I can use this technique to provide additional services to my clients and also training programs I want to bring out.

In line with that, I went this afternoon to see a lovely therapist, Angelita Woosnam. She organises Wellbeing Days in Warrington and is also an EFT practitioner. I went for a session of EFT, which is Emotional Freedom Technique – it’s tapping. It’s been called acupuncture without the needles, which is good because I’d faint with needles. Needles aren’t going to happen! The idea being that I try to get past my current expertise of holding myself back. I’m very good at it! I really do want to, you know, stop procrastinating, stop stopping myself from doing what I know I am capable of and what I know works and putting it out there in my name and in nobody else’s.

I went to see Angelita this afternoon and it was very, very interesting. I’ve got pretty big issues with control as well and I didn’t want to say too much or reveal too much. Not that I have any secrets. Nothing has ever been, you know, traumatic in my life on you know a major trauma or anything. But it is quite strange revealing your inner thoughts.

So this afternoon I did that with Angelita, I had my first session of EFT. I really do think, well it was enlightening. I’ll put it that way, it was enlightening. It was very, very relaxing once I had chilled out and stopped, err basically avoiding the situation. You wouldn’t believe… I was answering the phone and all sorts, making coffee and doing anything rather than sit in that chair, just relax and go with it. I’m looking forward to my next session later in the month with Angelita.

On that note, I hope that this gives you just a little bit of inspiration to go out there and do something that scares the crap out of you to put it mildly. Go out there, see how you feel about it and just do it. I’ll speak to you soon.

Over to you…

Have you tried any alternative therapies to overcome your fears?  What worked for you?

    Hi Jan,

I totally understand about the photo dilemma, as I used to be also quite scared about putting my photo online and am also a very introvert person. I think it’s because sometime there are so many negative privacy related stories in the press and because you don’t want to endanger or put one or one’s family at any risk. The EFT sounds interesting and it’s great to hear that you found it beneficial.

I look forward to your next video

I loved seeing your smiling face Jan! I haven’t seen you since your last master mind so this was just great to see you. I’ve definitely been there with the fears…no wait…I’m still there. I avoid it just the same. I just don’t have the confidence nor do I have the social skills to pull it off. But I’m trying and hopefully I’ll be brave enough to do it!

I have the social skills of an ape sometimes Misty! Close your eyes and do it – it’s never as bad as you think it is (I keep telling myself that!)

Considering more than 15 people told me they were hopping aboard the challenge and to date, there’s you, me, Tracie and Sky doing them… well girlfriend, you are way ahead of everybody else!

You’re doing a great job and I love listening to the accent! I have no doubt that if you stopped creating videos — people WOULD notice! So, keep it up! 🙂
