UK Online Business Is Booming [Infographic]

April 22, 2013 by Jan Kearney

Business is booming online according to Barclays Online Business Outlook 2013. Isn’t it refreshing to see the words UK, business and booming all in one sentence?

The report found that online businesses are growing at a rate 57 times faster than the UK economy.  That’s amazing news.

Of course, there’s a downside.

Despite a rise in mobile traffic over the last year and the planned roll out of high-speed 4G networks this year, only 11% of businesses surveyed had a mobile ready website or app.

I’m glad that there are people like you who can help others get their business up to date with technology. Keeping up with the technology seems to be a big stumbling block for a lot of businesses.

Thanks for this info Jan! Just learning about online business and the mobile aspect of growth! Along with my blogging for health, I am very excited to be in the global beta launch for Rippln! Tweeted both of you links. Best Regards, Wendy Social Media MasterMind

Thanks for popping in and tweeting, Wendy.
As for Rippln – it has set off every hypey/scam alarm for me. Caveat Emptor. Not only does their video just go way OTT with the hype, a company webpage that has no privacy policy, the contact page doesn’t work – well that’s a walk away signal for me.

    Hi Jan

That’s great news, and good that we’re already online so (in theory) ready to take advantage.

One question, please….. I know my WP theme is “responsive”. Does that mean it is also mobile ready?

    Thanks

      Hi Joy,
A responsive theme just means that it will adapt it’s size automatically depending on what device it is viewed on. For most of us, a responsive theme is fine. It’s worth checking how your theme actually displays on mobile and if it is “mobile friendly” – easy to click on menus and phone numbers with a thumb.

A more complex website may be better having a mobile specific website. One that is designed to be light weight and load quickly on slower mobile speeds.

I have software to make all my sites mobile ready. The downside is that I don’t have the man hours (or should I say woman hours) to implement all the changes to each site.

Outsourcing that is out of the question too, until more funds drip into the mix! 🙂

Thanks for sharing… always a pleasure to stop by.

I thought the theme you had on was responsive, Bonnie? That should be more than enough for most situations.
      Thanks for popping in 🙂

I tweeted your message, but not sure if I had your twitter name right, as it didn’t show up automatically when I clicked your “click to tweet” link.

Thanks Bonnie – I really need to remember to put on the @JanKearney! Twitter has stopped talking to my mail (again) and I need to reinstall marketme after killing that (along with my email client) earlier in the week – need to catch up with my Twitter!
