I was taking a moment this morning to catch up with some reading with my coffee, when this gem whizzed through my feed. It’s 8 minutes of highlights from Jim Carrey’s Commencement Address at Maharashi University of Management.
I’m not a fan of Jim Carrey.
The only reason I stopped to watch was because the video came cunningly disguised as a blog post titled, “All Major Life Decisions Are Based On Love or Fear”
I stopped. Thought, “What the hell” and watched anyway.
This 8 minutes is full of little gems that resonated with me – I hope you enjoy it too.
Here’s some of my favourite snippets…
“So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality” (click to tweet)
“You can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance at doing what you love” (click to tweet)
“The effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is” (click to tweet)
“Risk being seen in all of your glory” (click to tweet)
Fear Disguised As Practicality by Jan Kearney

I just listened while I emptied the dishwasher 🙂 My favorite quote was also the one from Jim’s Dad who was let go from his accountancy job “You can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance at doing what you love”
Thanks for posting 🙂

Multi-tasking at its best Ana!

I thought this was a wonderful snippet from Jim Carrey’s speech and I wouldn’t mind listening to the entire speech (he really did a great job!)
It looks like he was honored and humbled too. The red color on his face shows you how emotional it was for him. AND, judging by the response of the audience, what he spoke to them about that night was very profound.
I don’t really care for Jim Carrey, but apparently there’s more to this man than meets the eye. 🙂

I’m listening to the full one now (with coffee again) You’ll find it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V80-gPkpH6M
Definately more to him than meets the eye, Bonnie. I was surprised.

I’m not a Jim Carrey fan either so I did not listen when I saw this all over the web, so thanks for sharing.

You’re welcome Marilyn 🙂

Hi Jan, Like many others here I wouldn’t have listened to this without your recommendation – but I’m glad I did!
My favourite was also the one about “Failing at what you don’t want”
Well worth an 8 minute pause!

I have come to enjoy Jim Carrey through my daughter, she loves him and his sense of humour! I have listened to the full speech and LOVED it – like most people, there is more to him than meets the eye – a powerful message – thank you for sharing!
