Do you make people register on your website?
Actually getting people to register on your website creates a bit of a challenge. Ask for too much information and response goes down.
From accessing exclusive content, to shopping online to something simple like leaving a comment is perhaps one of the most frustrating things as a user online. As a marketer, it’s really useful collecting that information.
Janrain recently did a bit of digging and compiled some interesting stats:
- 86% of people may leave a website when asked to create an account (Click to Tweet)
- 88% of online users admit they have lied on an online form (Click to Tweet)
- (my favourite…) 2 in 5 people would rather scrub a toilet than create a new password! (Click to Tweet)
I know I would rather scrub toilets than register on any website, let alone create a new password! What is most surprising for me though is…
- 77% of online users prefer social login (Click to Tweet)

Hi Shawn, You’re a braver woman than me! I avoid social sign ins, especially Facebook. I think that got even worse when the internet marketers started pushing it as the ideal way to grab peoples real email address. They’re not having mine!
Thanks for popping in and taking the time to comment 🙂

Hi Jan,
I normally just ignore websites asking for too much information. Talking about registrations – how about those cheeky ones who send you IM offers even though you have never subscribed to their list, and when you try to “unsubscribe” (having never subscribed in the first place), they have a form with about a hunderd questions for you to fill? I think these are songs from the same opera, with the sole goal of collecting and selling our information many times over! So I think people have a good point when they enter phony names and numbers.
Great post!

I know where you are coming from, Galina! I hold my hand up, I have a range of names and email addresses especially for the occassion… That’s bad I know, but you only need to see my gmail to understand why I do that. 139,000 unread messages!

Nice infographic – it’s so true that I would rather disappear than fill in yet another form.
I knew social login works great, but no idea it was that high.
Thanks for the great info.

Hi Dee, I was surprised at how high the social login preferences were too. Thanks for popping in and taking the time to comment 🙂
