Yes, I have lost it…
I was reading Tiffany’s blog on personalisation and why we fear it. Needless to say, it struck a cord not least because of my own hang ups about showing myself online and not hiding behind a character or logo. But also because small businesses I have worked with often do a similar thing.
They hide behind a corporate image and try to portray that their business is bigger than it actually is.
I thought I would have a chat about it. I don’t own a video camera, so you poor devils are stuck with a horrendous webcam video with even worse sound! I blame Tiffany Dow…
In the video I talk about the advantage you have as a small business online and why being more personal works.
Tiffany Implicated In Jan Webcam Video Shocker by Jan Kearney
Tiffany Dow says
OMG I have NO clue what you were nervous about because you are a natural pro at this. You know when I first did Teleseminars (phone) I about fainted I was so scared. Took me like a year to get over it. LOL!
I want to tell you something stupid too. Your accent is one that just oozes motivation to me. In the movies, whenever I hear the accent, it’s usually some wise person motivating someone else. LOL! Just something I noticed when I listened to you.
Jan Kearney says
Hahaha! Tiffany, I am far from pro – I couldn’t stand still! And I don’t do scripts well either, can you tell I didn’t even look at my notes just went with it lol
Back in the day when I had “proper jobs”, I did training and seminars on occassion, and I couldn’t stand still then. Lots of pacing, walking between seats and talking with my hands – and no scripts just whatever was on the screen as prompts. I had to keep reminding myself in that 5 min vid that the camera couldn’t move and follow me hahaha
Thank YOU for your inspiration and support 🙂

Hey Jan,
This is a great post and video! I would echo what Tiff shared about your accent is awesome! I will admit I like the local business idea that your going with and I see this one really growing for you!
Keep up the great work,
Eric
Jan Kearney says
Hi Eric, thank you for your lovely comment! My accent is good old “woollyback” hardly Hollywood lol Local businesses need our help online, this web stuff can be so overwhelming and it’s such a rewarding area to be in 🙂

Oh Jan! You’re such a wonderful talker! You must do more of these vlogs! Congratulations on biting the bullet and just “doing it!”
Nothing can hold you back now! I expect we’ll see more of you! What’s next? Oh yea, podcasts! 🙂
I have a bad head cold that hit me this evening, so I’m not feeling well. Tamsin says I need to get to bed, so I guess I better.
Jan Kearney says
lol Bonnie, I don’t know about podcasts – you should have seen me fighting with Audacity today. Did some guided relaxation mp3s with a friend/client and I’ve been growling at it all evening. That’s using new software for you lol
I hope you are feeling better today! Look after yourself, you’re burning the candle at both ends again!

Jan – I absolutely loved this post for 2 reasons. One – for the fact that you were very brave to video it, but two – simply because it’s a great post with lost of very good points. I loved the fact you said ‘if you try to look like a large organisation then you’re no longer a small business’ Quite obvious but many times we try to be something that we’re not, so very well put!
Jan Kearney says
Hi Lizz, lovely to see you here 🙂
It is an awful vid but the message is true. Thanks for popping in and your lovely comment!

Great job Jan, you are a natural! I enjoyed it thoroughly and look forward to hearing a “podcast”! I also commend your courage do it in the first place! I’ve got to do one myself.
Jan Kearney says
Podcasting should be much easier, Debra – I chat away behind the scenes on screencast vids quite often so it’s not as much of a nightmare 🙂 Thank you for your support too 🙂
