Keyword Discovery – An Essential Task
Whether you’re building your website, blogging or creating content for video, presentations and more online, knowing the words and phrases your audience uses when searching is a big advantage.
Do you really know what people are searching for?
Keyword discovery can be incredibly frustrating, particularly for local searches. Using more traditional keyword research tools, localised searches often fall under the radar because of poor search volume.
The irony is, despite low search volume these types of localised searches are often very highly targeted. People using long-tail keywords are that step closer to an actual purchase.
For this reason, when writing localised website or blog content I often use keyword suggestion tools to brainstorm long-tail phrases to include in my content. Yes, I use free tools such as Ubersuggest, Soovle or Keyword Tool.
These tools use the auto-suggest feature of Google and other search engines to reveal what words and phrases people are currently searching for. There’s no monthly averages and low search volumes to get in the way of discovery.
Introducing Power Suggest Pro
To be totally open and transparent, a random guy (Ted Chen) emailed me and asked if I would be interested in trying out Power Suggest Pro. I’ll admit I rolled my eyes and almost hit the trash button – even my little blog gets a LOT of requests to review or write about products and services. Many simply aren’t relevant or requesting the typical SEO type guest posts that I have never done and don’t plan on starting!
What stopped me?
Well, his mail was short, to the point and relevant. OK, I’ll be honest – he mentioned content keyword brainstorming and I get way to much fun out of these things (I need a life!)
I popped over and checked out his site. I even watched the video! Immediately I was gutted I hadn’t found Power Suggest Pro sooner.
The sales page gives a really in-depth look into Power Suggest Pro without coming across as hype. The page answers lots of questions and gives many examples of how the tool can be used to benefit your business online.
Five stars and ten team points to whoever put it together – if I had come across the page earlier I would have whipped out my wallet and bought it. (Coming from someone who doesn’t buy off sales pages that is the highest praise I can give!)
Power Suggest Pro does one thing and does it very well – keyword discovery. Local phrases are a biggy for me, since that is what I do! It handled local keyword discovery really well, I’ve put a quick example in the video below.

What Does Power Suggest Pro Do?
Power Suggest Pro helps you to discover the keywords and phrases people are typing into six search engines:
- Amazon
- YouTube
- Ebay
- Bing
- Yahoo
The tool uses the autocomplete function from these search engines to pull back a range of search phrases that you can use in your content creation. These are “live” phrases and not pulled from keyword planners.
You have the option to change country settings for Google/YouTube and Yahoo. It’s set as US by default but there are many countries to choose from. This means you get to see the terms people in your country are currently typing into search not a 12 month average or from an out of date list.
The Power Suggest Pro interface is very simple and easy to use and allows you to quickly remove phrases that are not relevant.
There’s the ability to build on your initial list by adding different or refined searches to your original search by ticking the Add To Current Results box. This is invaluable and saves so much time! No more exporting to spreadsheets, sorting and removing duplicates.
Then there’s the wild-card search…
My eyes were well and truly opened!
Since the example I used in the video was for Dog Trainer Liverpool, this gif seemed appropriate. You wouldn’t believe what some people type into search (or perhaps you would!)
By using the asterisk within searches on Google and Amazon you can really drill down into phrases that people are searching for right now and come up with some very relevant keywords. Just in case you need some inspiration for your wild-card search terms, there’s a built in Ideas section that gives example search phrases for informational, solution seeking and buyer intent searches.
I’ve not even played with the hashtag search yet!
Once you have refined your keywords it is very simple to add to a list and copy as either 1 keyword per line or comma separated to a spreadsheet or keyword research tool of your choice.
Why Use Power Suggest Pro?
The importance of keyword discovery can’t be under-estimated. It’s the foundation of any search optimisation and competition research, not to mention refining paid search campaigns, creating blog posts and online content or even developing online products.
Power Suggest Pro almost allows you to become a mind-reader. I’ve used it to take basic phrases in a business I know nothing about and ferret out great location based phrases that I can use within location landing pages to make those pages highly relevant to searchers.
Search is all about relevancy. By using terms that people are currently typing into search as part of your content you become relevant to their search.
In the video example a localised term popped up (dog training classes Garston Liverpool), which showed as having zero search volume in Google Keyword Planner. It’s an example of the type of phrase that may be missed, yet because it shows in autosuggest you know people are searching.
While you wouldn’t necessarily use this term as a main focus for a website, page, article or video because of it’s very low volume, it is beneficial to use the term as part of the page or post content, video script or description to “reinforce” the main topic.
I know I have mentioned local search more than once! Power Suggest Pro is useful for far more than local search. I’d recommend this keyword discovery tool for anyone creating online content:
- articles
- blogs
- landing pages
- Google Plus updates
- videos
- presentations
- refining ppc ads
In fact, any online content where discovering long-tail keywords is advantageous!
Is Power Suggest Pro The Perfect Keyword Discovery Tool?
Power Suggest Pro is a keyword discovery tool not a competition analysis tool. If you want an all singing, all dancing research tool then it is not for you.
Compatibility – Power Suggest Pro only runs on Windows (XP through to 8), it won’t run natively on a Mac.
I am bowled over and love this discovery tool. I’d love it even more if there was some way to sort keywords into groups, but I think I’m being a bit picky there!
Comparing against other tools
Comparing against free keyword discovery and suggestion tools, Power Suggest Pro wins hands down. It’s far more flexible. It has the advantage of building on your keyword list, wild-card searches, hashtag searches and ease of keyword selection and removal of non-relevant phrases. I’ve not experienced any issues of being unavailable or access errors.
Against paid tools…
The only paid discovery tool I use to compare against is Longtail Pro, which works by pulling phrases from Google’s Keyword Planner. It’s for that reason I also use the other free keyword discovery tools. It’s a bit like comparing apples to oranges – they do different things and use different sources. It’s not a fair comparison.
When it comes to discovery, Power Suggest Pro does provide some different phrases by pulling from autosuggest. How many depends on the seed keyword search – from a handful to lots!
I am genuinely gutted I didn’t come across Power Suggest Pro sooner.
It definitely has earned it’s place in my nifty online tool box. I’ve no hesitation in giving Power Suggest Pro a 5 star rating (sorry Mac users!)
Conclusion
Power Suggest Pro is an incredibly powerful keyword discovery tool disguised in a simple to use interface. It’s an ideal tool to uncover untapped niche keywords and hone in on your audience’s needs and painpoints.
This deceptively simple keyword discovery tool has already provided me with some amazing insights (not to mention hours of entertainment!)
With such an affordable lifetime license with no monthly fees, the question really is can you afford not to use Power Suggest Pro to discover keywords for your online content?

Anytime I see the term keyword research, my eyes glaze over and I check out. It’s always been too complicated for me to figure out.
But, I bought this software after it came out based on someone’s opinion and review that I trust. So far, it’s been great to use and easy for me to understand. I find I’m still not using it to my full potential though.
That should be a goal for this year I think.

Hi Jenn, it’s great to hear Power Suggest Pro was easy for you to use and understand! Keep playing with it, the tool really does sniff out some treasures!
Joy Healey says
Hi Jan,
If you’re impressed by something, I take notice. That’s meant to be a compliment by the way 🙂
I am very BAD on keyword research. I know I should do it, but it’s always been a bit hit and miss whether I actually get round to doing it. I already have one keyword research tool, and it’s a market leader, but I have to confess my head starts to hurt when I try to use it… And it wasn’t cheap.
So I read your review and wished I could afford something as straightforward as Power Suggest Pro. Then I tentatively opened the sales page and scrolled straight down to the bottom, ready to close it with burnt figures…
But instead I’ve whipped out my credit card. At that price it’s a must-have. I’ve got lots of ideas for using it already. Thanks for a great review.
No time to stay – I want to play 🙂

Hi Joy! I am sure Power Suggest Pro will give you hours of fun – not to mention the all important keyword ideas!
The “add to current search” feature has saved me so much time already, just that feature alone is worth it’s weight in gold for me.
I hope you enjoy the software Joy. You made me chuckle with your first line – are you saying I’m a bad tempered bugger that’s rarely impressed with anything? (You wouldn’t be far wrong!!) 🙂
Joy Healey says
LOL – most certainly not! I am saying you are a discerning reviewer whose opinion I trust 🙂
It’s a great tool and it’s given me lots of ideas for using it to help myself and other small businesses.
Enjoy the rest of your week, Joy
